There are two items to avoid to assist in male fertility: drinking and smoking. Many men are unaware that their diets can influence their fertility. Processed meat products such as bacon and sausages alter male fertility negatively.
According to a study conducted by Harvard University in 2013, those who participated in fertility treatments and consumed more than one portion of processed meats such as bologna, salami bacon, hamburgers, along with hot dogs, came out with less semen quality. The researchers examined the sperm samples of 156 participants and compared them with each individual’s diet by the questionnaire for food intake.
However, those who ate more chicken or other birds were more likely to increase their fertility. But, the study does not reveal the exact reason for this and how it affects the cycle. Dr. Rebecca Sokol says that some studies have demonstrated that diet impacts fertility in humans. Still, diets are extremely complex, and it’s hard to determine how a specific food item can impact reproduction results. There’s a possible explanation that processed meats can contain more hormones and chemical residues than the other types of meat, leading to reproductive implications.
The rate of fertilization for In vitro fertilization (IVF) that does not require an intracytoplasmic injection of sperm (ICSI) increased by 28 percent in those who consumed the least amounts of cooked meat than those who consumed the most prepared meat (82 percent against 54 percent).
In a different study from 2014, released in Epidemiology, The researchers also found that processed meat consumption was linked with lower sperm counts.
This raises the question: What should men who are thinking about the possibility of having children eat? The positive side is that the Harvard Nutrition team also noted the positive correlation between men’s fertility and fish consumption. According to the study, white meat fish, such as Halibut and cod, were linked with a higher proportion of normal male sperm. Tuna, salmon, along with other species of dark meat fish, in contrast, are associated with an increased number of sperm in total.
It is unclear if eating red meat is beneficial or detrimental to your fertility due to insufficient deep research. There is an opportunity that the meat isn’t the cause, but the hormones or chemicals in processed meats may be the cause. Whatever the case, healthier choices in diet can be identified through tests for food sensitivity with the help of a Naturopathic Physician; when combined with a healthy lifestyle that includes moderate exercise and a healthy diet, it can increase the chances of men having a fertile child.
