How do you measure body composition?

The format is one of many methods that could be employed to calculate the body’s fat mass and lean mass, with different levels of accuracy.

Weight loss doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re losing weight in the correct method. It is essential to be aware of the extent and the area of your body fat. Having a high amount of fatty tissue raises the chance of developing cardiovascular diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and some types of cancer.

The fact that you are thin doesn’t mean you have a lower weight loss than thinner people because the latter could have more muscle. There is also the case that you’ve increased muscle mass while exercising hard without noting any changes in the weight scales.

Over the years, scientists have debated the most precise method to determine the amount of fat in your body. The weight scale is the most common and simplest option since it can indicate body weight. However, these scales do not provide data on the quantity of fat. That’s why we need to look to more precise methods.

In Marcare Clinic, when beginning an exercise program to lose weight (in combination in conjunction with exercise programs), it is essential to be aware of the body composition of our clients and, more specifically, how much the lean mass (muscle bones, muscles, as well as viscera) in addition to the weight within your body.

To accomplish this, we monitor and measure the progress of our patients during their consultations by using several different techniques:

  • Body composition with multifrequency
  • Octopolar impedantiometry.

The multifrequency octopolar imperantiometry scales are fitted with an advanced signal generator with high frequency and precise detector.

Deficient energy, which is entirely inaccessible and does not pose any risk to the patient, travels through the body, allowing us to assess the resistance of tissues of the body. The resistance is determined by the amount of water in the tissues and has a steady proportion of muscle mass. Particularly 73% of the muscle mass is composed of water.

In conjunction with the patient’s sexuality and age, these numbers enable us to determine the muscles volume of the whole body. Unfortunately, this weight of fat acts as an insulator (as it is not conducive to electricity); therefore, it cannot be measured directly.

However, this method could produce varying outcomes from various tests, particularly in situations in which the patient is negatively affected by the results of any actions which could affect your body’s levels of water. For example, this is the situation in the case of those suffering from swelling of the lower extremities, fever, people who are taking diuretics, etc. and performing this test as soon as possible after drinking alcohol or other liquids (water-alcohol, water, etc. ) or after having an aperitif or following an intense exercise session (we may lose anywhere between 1 and 2 kilograms of water.

This is recovered within the next 24 hours following exercising). Some women also experience a periodic change in their weight due to menstrual cycles, during which the number of liquids in a few kilograms can rise. In truth, the proportion of fat can decrease temporarily because of an increase in total weight.

Body composition by using dual-energy x-ray absorption (DXA).

DXA can be described as the highest accurate device for clinical use, known as the “gold standard” of body composition measurements

It is considered to be the most accurate method of measuring the body’s fat. This method is used to determine the amounts and percentages of bone, fat, and muscle. The sum of all three tissues makes up what is called the mass. In addition, the body can be divided into distinct areas (arms and torsos, legs, and so on. )

This allows us to identify the precise area of fat accumulation or muscle tissue and then develop an effective weight loss plan or a similar program to strengthen the body.

The typical range for fat percentage is vast and is contingent on the population of reference. In other words, If the population used as a reference are top athletes (1) or catwalk models or a representative of healthy adults, The regular range will is modified accordingly.

One of the most significant advantages of DXA (2) is that it allows us to analyze its distribution of Android fat and gynoid fat since they are the best risk indicators for health.

We aim toward in Marcare Clinic to ensure that women have a body fat percentage below 30% and men have a fat percentage below 25 percent. But, your goals could differ based on other factors that are not directly connected to your health, like body image (aesthetics) or factors that affect your physical performance.

Anthropometry

Anthropometry is the most popular method used in Sports Medicine. It is built on measuring skin folds by using the caliper, also called the “skinfold caliper,” in addition to a range of different diameters and perimeters. Therefore, it is essential to have the measurements done by a professional on the subject (anthropometrist).

With these anthropometric calculations and applying a set of formulas, the professional can estimate how much the body’s composition and the somatotype of the person concerned. Over time, the measurement and analysis of fat folds, the total measurement, and their circumference will accurately document the anthropometric modifications of a person’s body.

It is believed that the folded curvature used to measure cutaneous fat may give valuable insight into the size and distribution of the subcutaneous fat. But, it only offers limited but not comprehensive body fat information. Furthermore, it’s not suitable for measuring the folds on the skin of obese people.

Morphological study of images (photographs).

The analysis of morphological features lets us observe subtle changes in the body’s shape, volume, and posture, which are difficult to discern with the older methods of analyzing the body’s structure.

In the Marcare Clinic, we employ the various body composition measurements together to maximize the advantages that each one can offer.

There are numerous ways of determining the body’s structure, and each offers distinct advantages and drawbacks. This is why here at Marcare Clinic in Hamilton, in our clinical examinations carried during our nutritional consultations; we use the above methods to assess how a person’s physique is involved. When utilized in conjunction, the techniques can provide highly accurate information and formulate nutritional guidelinespersonalized diets, and schedules for training.
