6 Food Elimination for Eosinophilic Esophagitis

6 Food Elimination for Eosinophilic Esophagitis
Table of Contents

Research has proven a strong link between food allergy and eosinophilic Esophagitis (EOE). The following six foods are often related to this reaction: dairy, wheat eggs, soy and eggs, seafood/shellfish, and nuts.

There isn’t a reliable test to determine food allergies associated with EOE. Elimination diets are a great way to detect food allergies and help improve your health. Begin by getting rid of two prevalent food allergies, wheat, and dairy.

HOW TO DO AN ELIMINATION DIET:

Step 1. Plan

Begin working with your medical team to determine what foods could trigger symptoms. Set a date to begin the diet once you’re confident that you can succeed. Make sure you have the necessary nourishment in your pantry and prepare as much as you can ahead of time.

Step 2. Eliminate

Eliminate all six foods from your diet over four weeks without exception. It is essential to read food labels and exercise caution when dining out, as you are not controlling the ingredients used in restaurants.

Step 3. Challenge

If your symptoms haven’t changed after four weeks, consult your doctor.

When your health has improved, you can begin the challenge phase with one of the foods you have had to stop eating for some time. When you are done, note your symptoms.

The signs of failure to eat food can be mild, or pains, cramps, and vomiting, trouble swallowing, or even food in compaction. Any change after introducing food items should be noted down and considered a reaction. It is typical for EOE reactions to food to take a long time to develop or even days after exposure.

CHALLENGE INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Introduce ONE new food per week. (Dairy wheat, wheat, soy eggs or nuts, seafood/shellfish)
  2. Take one serving of food you ate in the morning. (Example glasses of milk, or one piece of bread)
  3. If you don’t experience any signs or symptoms, consume two more significant portions of food in the evening and the afternoon.
  4. It would help if you continued eating at least one piece of food every day in the following three days.
  5. If the food doesn’t cause any symptoms, it’s considered safe.
  6. Be patient and wait to incorporate the safe food into your diet until your other food challenge is completed.
